In His Debt

I’m giving a talk at our church today, and here’s an excerpt:

In the gospel of Luke in the New Testament is a story of one woman’s expression of love to Jesus Christ.

One of the Pharisees desires that Jesus should eat with him. He goes to the house and sits down to meat. “And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.”

The account relates the Pharisees reaction, which was surprise that Christ would allow a woman who is sinner to touch him. Jesus knows this man’s thoughts and relates a parable, “There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?” (Luke 7:36-50)

This woman could represent any of us. We each depend upon the Savior as our creditor. When we exercise faith in Jesus Christ and repent of our sins, we receive His forgiveness.  We are in debt to him. As a result, we develop a deep love and gratitude for Him and for our Heavenly Father.

We are indeed all in His debt. Thanks for this reminder of how much we owe…
